What makes a forum personable?

Personable: "pleasant in appearance and personality"

For me personally, the members. A forum can look incredible on the outside, but if the members are not pleasant in their demeanor, there's nothing attractive about the forum.

:yeahthat:

Members also need to not be so cliquey. A lot of times when I visit another community the members there will be quoting each other and talking amongst themselves while ignoring other people's attempts to join in on the conversation. What a turn off.

This. I think it's hilarious when communities consider themselves "friendly and welcome", and while that's true to some extent, after a new person is welcomed in their introduction thread, they get ignored after that and the people doing the welcoming return to socializing with the people they've made friends with on the forum they've always been interacting with. Often times, I see a lot of people saying "post more!" when I make mention of this, and when I do post in a once hot topic, the thread dies out for a while until other veteran members start posting again.

So really just being genuine when you say you're a welcoming and friendly community is what makes a community personable. Welcoming and friendly does not mean posting once to greet a new member and never speaking to them again.

I seen this before and tried to point it out but they wouldn't believe it. Something tells me they really knew what I said was truth and would rather suppress it then own up to it and deal with it.

I have to say you having this problem would say a lot about you as a board owner. A board takes on the personality and character of its owner as they are the standard bearer for what being a good member on any given board should be like. The important thing is to carry yourself as a person others should want to strive to be in how they post and conduct themselves on the board whether it be through posting, pming, or doing staff duties.

From a noob perspective, it's been more personable than some other forums. I just hope it stays that way and purple don't get locked into their little shells. I love to expand my horizons and Off Topix has been very easy to become accustom to.

Definitely the members. As the old saying goes, a house is not a home. How a forum looks or tries to present itself is no substitute for how it actually interacts.

I would also like to think that Off Topix is pretty personable in comparison to other places. We have a lot of intelligent and high character people here.

Thank you for the quick assessment Dee and Fatal Dawn. :)
