A phobia (from the Greek: φόβος, Phóbos, meaning "fear" or "morbid fear") is, when used in the context of clinical psychology, a type of anxiety disorder, usually defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer commits to great lengths in avoiding, typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational. In the event the phobia cannot be avoided entirely, the sufferer will endure the situation or object with marked distress and significant interference in social or occupational activities.

Do you have any phobias or know anyone with them? If so, what are they? Do you think people who have persistent irrational phobias can be cured of them somehow?

I have a fear of heights, though I'm fine with heights from a plane and could do a parachute jump, but I hate heights in buildings. Not sure what you would call that.

I hate spiders as well.

And work :P

My biggest phobia any color and any kind of....

Well, I prefer to keep a reasonable distance from dangerous animals and I don't particularly want bugs and such walking over me... but I wouldn't call those phobias.
So as far as I know, I don't actually have any.

I avoid elevators like the plague. I was never like that until I got stuck in one for over 30 minutes. The only good thing about that was I wasn't alone.

A Swansea mother-of-two is terrified by just thinking about The Muppet Show.

Metro reports that Lindsay Broom, 37, has suffered from a phobia of puppets - or automatonophobia - since she was five.

...
She realised the extent of her fear when she spotted a Muppet toy in a shop as a teenager and "completely freaked out".

She is also scared of Jim Henson's other creations, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock.
