Photo fix?

I was out for some photography today where I took this nice shot, but there's a problem I didn't notice until now. There is a large dark area covering most of the photo caused by a shadow and I've tried my best at fixing it with GIMP to no avail, as I'm not that experienced with photo-editing, especially when it comes to situations like this.

So if anyone don't mind, can any of you do this simple fix for me? I got myself frustrated over that blip, even when it was a fairly good one
