Phpbb Or SMF?

I think an answer given by many forum administrators is applicable to this topic: you go with whichever software you, as the administrator, are most comfortable using.

As for me, I was using phpBB since I joined my first forum, and my forum has been running on it for approximately four years. That said, it was an accident that I settled upon phpBB, and I could easily see myself having chosen a different Internet forum software.

At the time, in any case, I simply wasn't that curious about the options, in terms of Internet forum software. To me, Internet forums was a small world that consisted of phpBB, the very fancy vBulletin, a simple ProBoards, and maybe a few more small fry alternatives.

I never managed a forum using SMF, but I have, in recent years, participated at a few. My opinion of SMF is favorable, and I may very well have tried it if I weren't already settled on a software.

Regards,

Kevin

Of the two, I much rather prefer to go with phpBB. Only because I am more familiar and comfortable with it.

Good point Medora, i just got trying both out on my localhost, i'm have to give SMF a shot only cause it's real easy to run the administration through it. But the layout on the forums is not so great..

Phpbb looked more advance but had a real crappy ACP.

Cheers!

I'd Still like to hear more opinions.

phpBB3 for me, simply for the reason I am very familiar with it and it is so easy to customise.

Are the modifications a hassle when their is an update like example when 3.0.6 updated 3.0.7?

That really depends on what mods you have installed. Thus far I haven't really had too many problems with updates, though I have had to redo one or two mods here and there.

I usually find it's better to wait for a few weeks when an update becomes available. This gives the mod authors time to update their mods if necessary.

Bear in mind that when ever phpBB3 does get an update, if you're using a custom style, then that needs to be updated too.

Ive ran forums on both.. Both have their ups and downs. SMF is way better for installing modifications / skins as its all automatic. Phpbb installing a mod can take hours depending on how big it is. Overall I prefer phpbb though. Its more user friendly.

phpBB for me. I am used the software and even though it can take ages to install MODs 99% of the time they are worth it. Plus they have great support

phpBB is the one I've always used and started with(netforums.us was a free forum host that I used for my first forum and it had phpBB2)
