An aerial view of Eric Newberry, Dave Calkins, and Mike McCune surfing on the Turnagain Arm tidal bore in Cook Inlet, Alaska. They rode the wave caused by the incoming tide for up to five miles on their stand-up paddleboards. Bores occur when the leading edge of an incoming sea tide forms a large wave that travels up a river or narrow bay against the direction of the current.
