Alright, this topic was brought up on another forum I'm on so I wanted to ask:

Do men (gamers) dislike playing games with female characters as the main player?

My gamer guy friend told me once that when there is an option to play a girl he always did because if he was going to spend countless hours on a game he wanted something nice to look at.

So your thoughts men and even women.

Women gamers, do you mind playing games with male characters?

Let's discuss!

I guess that's a good reason. I prefer to play in 1st person myself.

Can't say I've played a lot of female characters, but there were a few.

I prefer to play as a female character, especially when the game involves customization. Lets me recreate my persona and gives me more ideas for written work involving her.

I've written several works with female leads, in female voice, and what not. And don't have any problems doing it.

It's a story, not an autobiography, and I don't see how the attributes of a character in a story like the one linked below have any reflection on me. And I tend to think a game would work the same way.

For instance:

Outside the thunderstorm raged and blew. Sheets of rain teemed down. Violent winds gusted with considerable force. Lightning shattered the sky and thunder made the landscape tremble.

Dorothy was almost in tears.

She was shaking as she got into the car, then she almost whimpered when a particularly strong gust ripped the top off of a tree and sent it crashing down not far from the road.

By the time the two cars got to the campground they were all feeling the effects of the storm.

The men were huddled under the old heavy canvas awning that was straining the home made galvanized pipe frame it was strung over. They had been watching the storm and grilling sausages.

But as the women scurried under the shelter the storm seemed to break anew with fresh power.

One of the pipes began to bend under the assault and three of the men worked to secure the tarp to something stronger.

Then a low howl began off in the distance.

In a few seconds it became an unmistakable piercing wail.

Come on! Dorothy's husband shouted into the camper.

The old shower building, with its concrete block walls and steel beamed roof was the only realistic protection in the area.

The entire group ran as one to the building that already had several people in it.

Somebody had a transistor radio on a local station. It was talking about a funnel cloud being sighted not far from where they were.

Dorothy looked up from the shelter of her husband's arms at the corner of the sky visible through the vent high in the wall.

... i'm sorry... she whispered softly.

I'm male and played Lollipop Chainsaw (female protagonist contained) just to try it out. At first it was good, but it turned out to be inappropriate for people who are in high school or even college.

It's M-rated, so obviously...

I saw the previews for that Lollipop game. Ugh, worse than Rayne from BloodRayne. Way worse.

Though I like BloodRayne when I put it in GOD mode so I have unlimited bullets, blood, and at the same time nothing can hurt me. It's fun to play in this mode after you've beaten it all the way through.

But now I'm getting off topic...

Did you mind playing it because the character was a girl, or was it the adult theme you didn't like? Do you typically play games with male leads?

People who dismiss Suda51's work generally don't understand his methods, nor do they know of his previous works >_> /OffTopic

1. Apparently it was the mature theme, not the girl.

2. Most of the time, I play male-protagonist games, with the favourite being the Mario series.

I see.

I found this story today:

Quote from article:

Dear Customer who stuck up for his little brother,

you thought I didn’t really notice. But I did. I wanted to high-five you.

Yesterday I had a pair of brothers in my store. One was maybe between 15-17. He was a wrestler at the local high school. Kind of tall, stocky and handsome. He had a younger brother, who was maybe about 10-12 years old. The only way to describe him was scrawny, neat, and very clean for a boy his age. They were talking about finding a game for the younger one, and he was absolutely insisting it be one with a female character. I don’t know how many of y’all play games, but that isn’t exactly easy. Eventually, I helped the brothers pick a game called Mirror’s Edge. The youngest was pretty excited about the game, and then he specifically asked me.. “Do you have any girl color controllers?” I directed him to the only colored controllers we have which includes pink and purple ones. He grabbed the purple one, and informed me purple was his FAVORITE.

The boys had been taking awhile, so their father eventually comes in. He see’s the game, and the controller, and starts in on the youngest about how he needs to pick something different. Something more manly. Something with guns and fighting, and certainly not a purple controller. He tries to convince him to get the new Zombie game “Dead Island.” and the little boy just stands there repeating “Dad, this is what I want, ok?” Eventually it turns into a full blown argument complete with Dad threatening to whoop his son if he doesn’t choose different items.

That’s when big brother stepped in. He said to his Dad “It’s my money, it’s my gift to him, if it’s what he wants I’m getting it for him, and if your going to hit anyone for it, it’s going to be me.” Dad just gives his oldest son a strong stern stare down, and then leaves the store. Little brother is crying quietly, I walk over and ruffle his hair (yes this happened all in front of me.) I say “I’m a girl, and I like the color blue, and I like shooting games. There’s nothing wrong with what you like. Even if it’s different than what people think you should.” I smile, he smiles back (my heart melts!) Big brother then leans down, kisses little brother on the head, and says “Don’t worry dude.” They check out and leave, and all I can think is how awesome big brother is, how sweet little brother is, and how Dad ought to be ashamed for trying to make his son any other way.

I like playing female characters in games. It's not in a perverse way or anything. Girls are just cuter. Duh!

A lot of people make fun of guys who play female characters in games, but I think that's silly. Girls are cuter, and I like cute things.

I am a hardcore gamer, a two-sport athlete, and a high school graduate. It is okay for me to play games with female characters. If the girl look appealing to a man's eye, I accept it.

I almost always play as a male character. No idea why.

I see no problems with it, as I played as a few female characters in fighting games.

Although it could be weird, like the case of Harvest Moon, where you would have to marry a guy in the female versions.
