Plumber Brian Hines is used to dealing with jobs in bathrooms. As owner of Highlander Plumbing in Waterford, Mich., that's his stock in trade.
On Tuesday, he had to deal with the trickiest job of his life: delivering a baby -- his baby -- on a bathroom floor.
Hines went out to work as normal Tuesday, even though his wife, Andrea, had started labor. He didn't feel the pressure was on: when their first child was born, the birth took hours.
Then Hines, 38, got a phone call from his mother telling him to come home immediately. He rushed back and found Andrea in the shower. Her contractions were getting closer and closer together.
With the help of a 911 dispatcher, Hines brought his baby son into the world and on to the bathroom floor.
I enjoy the irony -- plumber and bathroom floor, Hines told local news site ClickonDetroit. It's where I do my best work.
Hines spread out towels on the bathroom floor and called 911. By then he could already see the baby's head and he knew paramedics were still 10 minutes away. It was up to him to deliver the child.
Baby Daniel weighed 7 pounds and 13.5 ounces and measured 20 inches. His entire birth took seven minutes, according to The Oakland Press.
Dispatcher Joy Nick, who coached Hines through the delivery, said that he was excited by the whole situation.
He said, 'We're going to have a home delivery!' Nick told The Oakland Press.
Once Andrea and Daniel were safely in the hospital, Hines could see the funny side to the day's events.
This is like going form an observer in the bleachers to being the pitcher. Or the catcher, rather, Hines told a local ABC affiliate.
