Officers should wear uniforms on their way to and from work to increase police visibility and help reassure the public, a think tank has suggested.

The right-leaning Policy Exchange said in London that would equate to having an extra 1,200 officers on the streets.

But the Police Federation said the idea was impractical and would make officers and their families potential targets.

The think tank also said millions of pounds would be saved if civilian staff did more jobs performed by officers.

Its report Cost of the Cops said improving the visibility and availability of officers to the public must be a key strategic priority.

Those heading to work - particularly on trains and buses - should be expected to wear uniforms, it said.

In the US, at least where I live, police officers wear their uniform to/from work, and most bring their patrol car home with them.

Bad enough these men and women risk their lives while on duty. Now people want them to risk their lives while off duty.

What would reassure the public is more police visibility when they are ON duty.

Well that's one way of getting around a shortage isn't it ! But those equated extra 1,200 officers will be OFF duty ! I'm not sure what powers they would then have if they saw something happening or if they would even be 'expected' to do anything at all.

They would have the same powers if they wanted to get involved while off duty. Same goes for me as a Paramedic. If I see something while off duty, I'll be the first one jumping in there to help. They don't have to and neither do I but I feel I have an obligation when I took my oath to serve the public.

I'm not sure if it's the same for police over here, I'll have to try and

find out.
