Do some cultures care more about politeness than others?

Where does being polite seem most important?

I haven't been to other countries but just in what I've gathered (through other means), different cultures can have extremely different definitions of politeness and how people should be behaving. Japan for example.

Japan certainly does have a widespread reputation for being polite, to a fault. I think that I have heard that there are no "swear words" in the Japanese language...they have to incorporate American swear words.
Also, I think that Canadians are known for their politeness.

lol there are some offensive words.

Okay, there ya go! :D But still, those are pretty mild compared to American.
My son is fluent in speaking and writing (Kanji) Japanese, but we have never really had this conversation. :)

I have a Japanese friend at work and I must say that he's been a great lad. His level of politeness is always top notch and why I had to become a friend.

Indeed, I had a japanese friend growing up and their whole family was super polite.

This is true.... *adds deadpan* ...until you speak positively of Shawn Michaels to any Canadian wrestling fan, for instance....
