Pregnant Nurse In Fear Of Miscarriage Fired For Refusing Flu Vaccine

December 30, 2013

LANCASTER, Pa. (WJZ)—A woman who lives just over the border in Pennsylvania is drawing national attention for her beliefs.

As Mike Schuh reports, when the pregnant nurse refused a flu shot, she was fired.

For the past five years, 29-year-old Dreonna Breton came to her nursing job at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, Pa.

This fall, the hospital required her to get a flu shot.

“It’s frustrating to me to be forced to do something that you’re not comfortable with,” Breton said.

Well her child is more important than a job any day.
With national recognition, it will be good PR for any other hospital to hire her in her time of need.

Flu shots, at my hospital, are mandatory. The only exception is a doctors note stating a medical reason you cannot have the flu shot. The most common medical reason is a severe allergic reaction.

What if it kills your unborn baby?

Somebody told me that sometimes when people get the flu shot they end up getting the flu thats why I never have and never will get the shot.

Well the flu shot is them purposely giving you the flu virus so you build immunities.

The flu shot is them giving you the dead virus so your body can see it, learn how to destroy it so when it encounters the live virus out in the open then it will be better able to handle it as opposed to not getting the flu shot.

If you get sick after getting the shot then that means you were already sick and just hadn't shown any symptoms. You don't get sick the first day you get the virus as it takes time to work itself through you before you start feeling so you don't really get sick from the shot. I have taken the shot for years and never once got the flu from it in fact I rarely get sick at all.

Here are some facts regarding the flu vaccine:

Can I get the flu from the vaccine?

No, you cannot get the flu from the flu shot or the nasal spray. The flu shot contains inactivated (killed) flu viruses that cannot cause illness.

Are there side effects?
Mild side effects usually begin soon after you get the vaccine and last one to two days. Possible mild side effects of the flu shot include:

Soreness, redness, and swelling at the injection site
Fainting, mainly in adolescents
Headaches
Fever
Nausea

Serious side effects usually begin within a few minutes to a few hours after receiving the shot. Possible serious side effects of vaccination include:

Difficulty breathing
Hoarseness
Swelling around the eyes or lips
Hives
Paleness
Weakness
Racing heart
Dizziness
Behavior changes
High fever

The only side effect I ever had (and I've been getting the flu shot for years) is mild soreness at the injection site.

^ Same, Soreness and tiredness.

I think if you work in an environment like a hospital or caring for vunerable people then it should be mandatory.

Although I know 2 of our carers didn't want to have it. One rarely gets ill anyway and the other didn't want to get ill from it and then have to take time off sick.
But it's not that bad anyway.

The only thing I ever got was some soreness at the injection site but nothing major. I normally ask them to do my left arm as I am right handed in case there is some soreness afterwords.

One thing that Jazzy didn't mention is if you have an allergy to eggs then the flu vaccine can be dangerous because eggs are used in the production of the vaccine but they normally have a form that you fill out beforehand that asks for that sort of info before you get it. That's really the only reason not to get one is history of allergic reactions to it or things used in the production of the vaccine.

I didn't mention it as it's contained in the link I provided. I should have, however, because not all people will click a link. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Been there done that. One time it made me really nauseous afterwords.

And rightfully so. As a patient I wouldn't want to risk infection from the people that are supposed to help me.

I've never had a flu shot. It's a bit disconcerting that the shot itself can cause fainting.

I imagine that has little to do with the actual contents of the shot.

This is just ridiculous thing they are doing...

I'll never get it and I don't like taking drugs, I rather let my immune system get strong on it's own and I have by not taking stupid drugs and shots that make you worse at times...
