How do you decide who is going to be the next moderator at your board?

Do you advertise for it? Grant it to someone who asked to be one? Maybe you privately ask a good contributing member of your forum?

The staff as a whole decide on who to promote when we feel a need. Usually they are prominent contributors from the community.

Normally, if I see that they are doing quite well as a member. Jay and I will talk it over and then ask the member if they want to become a Mod. Damn great choice

on my fave board the owner/admin will ask the mods i the mod lounge to put forward ideas for new mods and they will all discuss it privatly in there.......................however since my partner (who is the longest serving mod) and i actually 'know' him away from the site he will asks us what we think of the suggestions and act on our advice......

..(this has been useful in the past.....one guy has alwats wanted to be a mod and is popular but he does have a huge chip on his shoulder about some things, and the power would go to his head, he is a great member but wouldnt make a good mod)... ...the prospective mod then gets asks before hand if they are interested in the role before it becomes public knowledge

he has very little to do with the forum as its just a small part of his online 'empire' so isnt normally up to speed with the forum and who is who as it were

I usually pick my best friends from MSN (people whom I trust) and people who beg for it.

Then when the forum has been active for awhile and needs new moderators, I choose the most deserving, or put up a forum election.

Promoting to moderator should be a dedicated and quality member of your own forum. When you ask friends or people who beg (IMO) you are asking for trouble. Friends fight and then you've lost friends because you are put between a rock and a hard place. People who beg (IMO) are only after the title.

Look within and I'm sure you can find some very deserving members.

We (the staff+admin team) discuss who we'd think would be a good choice and if we all (or almost all) agree, the person gets put as an intern (trial) for a few weeks to see if they can handle it and then we promote and give them the rest of the staff access.

[quote name='Cranos']We don't, the root admin makes staff decisions entirely on his own.

Sounds like a dictator.

Hmm, maybe. A very nice and friendly dictator XD.

I talk with the other staff when we think its time for another staff and pick someone who reported post and reported them correctly follows rules, etc.
