Things have been fine with this laptop but there is just one thing I'm a bit annoyed with... at a random time the fan would spin faster and louder for like 15 seconds or longer when it usually just runs much quieter. When it came to the Dell BIOS update I installed yesterday, it spun much faster so I guess it's to do with processes. My question is... is there anyway to stop it from happening again? Sorry if I sound stupid... I just find the sporadic whooshing of the fan annoying and distracting :\

Perhaps you'd be better off contacting Dell Tech Support?

I tried doing that but their email contact service was unavailable, and their site itself was loading up very slowly. However, there was one thread in their forum that matched that of my problem, considering that I'm only using this laptop for general work (word processing, speadsheets and such) and the occassional playing of 2D games on emulators. However, I can always send this laptop back for another one as part of PC World's deal and I hope the other laptops of different brands don't do the same thing. I've only had this laptop for a week you know.

Just wondering if you did what this one member posted on that above forum:

If you are concerned that they may be an issue with the fan not working correctly, then I certainly suggest running the extended fan diagnostics. Once in extended diagnostics choose custom then look for fan tests and if any are present thermal diagnostics. The following link will give instructions on loading the extended diagnostics.

Playing games will give the system a work out and it will warm up. The fan running while playing 3D games is to be expected. Just as long as diagnostics doesn't show anything you should be fine.

I'll do that tomorrow morning and I'll let you know about it. Would I have to choose the Extended Test option for the Diagnostics to check the fan? It might be that.

I would say yes only because the person quoted is a Dell tech support member. Can't wait to see what your findings are after running the test.

I ran into a strange problem... when I restarted the computer for the boot screen to appear, I pressed F12 (after having to hold the Fn key and then F12) and it caused the system to freeze. However, when I pressed Enter, it was able to continue but still couldn't get into the Diagnostics bit, so F12 more or less paused the screen. Surely there should be elsewhere I can access the Diagnostics...
