Two tips:

Nice ironed button down, nice jeans, and nice dress shoes. Don't even think about wearing white socks with this outfit either. And if the event isn't super dressy, roll your sleeves up. This works for SO MANY occasions.

Unkempt beards aren't sexy, trim that shit up so that it's a uniform length and wash it every time you shower.

Yeah, this. The only girls who like d-bags dressed in Hurley t-shirts, boardshorts and Oakley sunglasses are 15-year-old high schoolers. And get a god damn hairstyle. Not just a haircut. Not just a mop top surfer hair-do, but something you can be versatile with for when you need to dress up and when you can dress down. Also, clean your damn hands and feet. Dirty, unkempt nails are disgusting and a serious turn off. Same goes with you neckbeards who sit at your computer all day stewing in your own filth while the fat from all those Doritos you eat and Mountain Dew you toss back sits around your belly.

Wearing too much "flash"

A watch, a tasteful ring and maybe one other piece (sometimes) is plenty. Gold necklaces and bracelets on men can easily become way too much. If you're going for the gangster vibe a'la the New Jersey mafia, then by all means, pile on the gold chains. But if you're looking for something a bit more subtle, pare down the jewelry -- a lot.

And don't oversize your jewelry choices or go for too much sparkle, either. There's a fine line between elegant and gaudy. If you cross it, you'll be risking a "lounge lizard" vibe that even your mom won't find attractive let alone a potential mate.
