I keep seeing all these sloppily made forums with the default skin and hardly any posts being advertised lately. Why don't people spend time setting up their forums, perhaps getting a couple people to help create topics/posts to generate some sort of atmosphere BEFORE releasing it to the public?

Sometimes it's just excitement going on with the owner, and most who do this are very new at forum making. There's always categories up the wall or too many forums.

Yeah thats true...

I worked on this forum for about a week before I advertised it. I sent an invite to a few friends to help get some topics made and discussions going while I was installing mods and tying up loose ends.

I know I wouldnt feel right advertising a forum that was 'under construction.'

People should put a little time and effort into their forum before they go around promoting it. Chances are a majority of people will not join a forum that appears to have little to no effort put into it.

I agree, I help out on an advertising forum and there are millions of forums that are under construction. Most of them just have one member (the admin), they've got the default skin (or one that's just a variation of the default) and next to no posts. People are more inclined to join and be active on a forum that's got a bit of personality (so, a skin that stands out) and one that seems to be relatively active. These admins need to understand that if there's nothing on their forum for people to get involved with, then people will not bother to come back.

I think that was the biggest mistake I ever made when I was in my forum owning phase. I would get so excited about having a forum even half set up, and then I'd go to advertise it almost instantly, leaving no posts or anything of the sort. It's something that I have to learn to do.

I probably crossed the line of being too quick when advertising UW when it first opened.

I forgot to change the default theme, even! XD

It took awhile before I made a truckload of topics for UW, or finished the war system, too.

The first board I ran used the default skin simply because I had no clue what skins were or that could be changed. lol

It did well in spite of that and lasted for about two years.
