A US rabbi bought a desk on Craigslist only to find a bag stuffed with $98,000 in cash hidden inside.

Rabbi Noach Muroff, of New Haven, Connecticut, returned the money to the original owner of the $200 desk.

He and his wife found the money when they had to take it to pieces as it wouldn't fit through their office door.

They found the cash - worth more than £60,000 - in a plastic bag hidden behind the drawers.

Rabbi Muroff said: "The desk did not fit into this office by fraction of an inch. Behind the drawers there is this plastic bag, like shopping.

"We open it up and it's full of cash. And we counted up and there's $98,000 cash sitting in the bag.

"Right away my wife and I sort of looked at each other and said we can't keep this money."

They picked up the phone and called the original owner who had stuffed her inheritance in the desk and forgot where she put the money.

The lady, who has not been identified, was apparently "speechless" to have the money returned while Rabbi Muroff said the most important thing in life was to be honest.

Would you have kept the money? Why / Why not?

Yes, because technically you bought the money instead of finding lost or stolen money, they probably would have never realized it or known... :D

Good logic. I'll go with that! He paid for that money. :P

My guess is neither of those who have previously answered have had to live with a guilty conscience.
I would have to say your guess is 100% correct. Wonder how they'd feel if this same thing happened to them or a loved one.

How I'd feel if a friend or a loved one sold desk and cash for less cash?
The only thing sold was the desk for $200.00. I doubt the listing offered a bonus of $98,000 cash to anyone buying the desk.

There are people who don't trust banks, for whatever reason. Not everyone has a bank account. Since she didn't remember where she put the money, I'm banking on the fact she's an elderly woman.

^ Your question has no relevance to this thread topic.

That's their risky issue then.

Faith in the humanity temporally restored.

I totally agree wit Rabbi Muroff. I would have also given the money back.
