Anyone here have any experience with rabbits?

My parents own a rabbitry and have nearly 100 rabbits.

I've had a couple in the past as pets. ^^

They're cute and cuddly, but they poop too much!

:panic:

We had a rabbit once who hated us and would always try to bite us whenever we fed her. Her name was Audrey or Aubrey...I forget. It was a long time ago. But we gave her away to a family with some kids who might appreciate her more than we did.

I had a mean one too named "Nighty" but we we're still nice to her... one day the poor thing got attacked by a stray dog.

We tried to be nice to her, but she was just a very unhappy rabbit for whatever reason. That's terrible, though. Bunnies are so much smaller compared to dogs. D: I can't imagine how bad that was.

Well, I didnt have a pet rabbit anymore after that happened.

Rabbits?

Oh, yes.

We ended up with a couple of them for several years after:

"Two Angoras To Go Please."

OK. Until the day of the show the Desk only knew of two types of rabbits. The wild ones that live in the back yard, and the houserabbit variety that don't.
Now it knows of all sorts of bunnies. Like the Jersey Wooly, various dwarfs, and the however many kinds of Lops (droopy ear rabbits), Rex rabbits, and Flemish Giants that are bigger than a lot of dogs....
Oh yeah, check out the picture......

Is this a joke? You had a rabbit that bites, so you gave it to a family with children??? Am I the only one who sees how incredibly irresponsible that is?

Did you warn the family that the rabbit is a biter? Did you even follow up to make sure none of the children lost a finger or something similar? This has to be one of the most irresponsible things I've seen a pet owner do, and I've seen it all when it comes to pet owners. Wow.

Well, since you didn't ask me how old the children were, I'll tell you. They were our age, which was teenage--around 13, 14. And yes, we did tell them that the rabbit was a biter. They understood that and they really liked the rabbit as they had seen it a few times before, being family friends. It seemed to get along better with them for some reason. They had full capability to take care of it better than we could, so actually it was a much better decision than to keep it in a place where it wasn't happy. But thanks for freaking out and assuming the worse without having all the facts. :)

Aww, glad you could do right by that bunny. You found the right place for him to live.

Yes, me too! We loved that bunny and wanted to make it work. And we discussed what would be the best decision for all of us as well as the bunny. It was not happy with us despite us trying to love and give it food and shelter and water. It went to a household which was much more successful in giving it that, which was all that mattered.

I can relate, I've had pets that didn't work out with me personally, but seemed to respond well and differently to others too.

Whatever the reason, it's understandable. Sometimes, certain environments and personalities clash. Sometimes things just don't work out and they need to be remedied for the better of the animals' welfare. I would have never made the decision to give up this rabbit if she actually felt comfortable there, but subjecting her to fear and anger every time she was fed was ridiculous. She seemed stressed out by just that and really didn't like it when we tried to pick her up out of her big ass cage we made all nice for her.

I'm just glad she responded better to the family friends we gave her to. She was a lot happier there, which was the most important outcome.

Again, I am no teenager. I haven't been a teenager in more than 2 decades. I go by what you post, so perhaps you may consider offering a bit more detail when you post. Responsible pet ownership is another area that is very important to me and I will jump on things like you posted when I see them.

Or, you know, you could try asking questions instead of assuming something without knowing the details. How was I supposed to know what kinds of details you need to feel assured my rabbit was safe? I am not a mind reader, especially when it comes to having just met most of you only two months ago. But I agree with you on one point, Smooth. I am a responsible pet owner myself and it is sickening to know there are a lot of people in this world who are not. I have two very lovely, spoiled cats who are healthy and happy, and I would maim anyone who hurt them. I even hated to leave them with my mom to cat-sit when I went on vacation in August. She took such good care of them, though. She bought them a nice new cat tree to hide in, got them all delicious wet food, cleaned their box every day, and played with them so they felt comfortable. I had her send me photo updates! T_T
