Is there a relationship between poetry and music?

Since medieval times, people have been manipulating poetry to make music.

Are songs really poems?

Yes and no, most songs use basic rhyme schemes, so there is at least a minor correlation, but I think poetry goes deeper.

(not that songs aren't deep, that's not what I'm saying, plenty of songs are deep and meaningful)

A poem set to music is a song, a song that does not involve music is a poem.
