Well I got a call from my neighbors today while at work. They told me that a stray dog and a boy got into my yard. They said they heard the boy crying and yelling at the dog so they went over to see what happened. The dog had somehow got my rabbit's cage open (or maybe the boy opened it, I dont know) and the dog mauled the rabbit. When the boy saw the neighbors coming, he and the dog ran off down the street. I came home on my lunch break to clean up the remains.

RIP Nighty.

Nighty is such a cutey. I'm sure Nighty must of had an incredible life spent with you and your daughter. I really hope she's doing alright, please take care of yourselves! It's never a good experience to lose a pet...

I havent told her yet. Its actually her rabbit. She feeds it most of the time and gives it love an attention. She will be very sad. I'm thinking of telling her the rabbit ran away but the neighbors 3 year old daughter seen the dead rabbit so Im sure she will tell my daughter what happened anyways. So I might as well tell her the truth. Not looking forward to it.

That's horrible. I know how I would feel if one of my pets was mauled - it's a terrible way to go. That boy should feel awful, and he shouldn't have even been in your yard in the first place. I'm sorry for your loss

I had the same problem at my old place as well. Whats up with kids sneaking into my backyard all the time?

A severe lack of sense and responsibility.

I know what I would do if I saw the boy again...

Well Ive never even seen him. If I did know who it was I'd go talk to the parents and tell them to buy my daughter a new rabbit.

This is so sad that I teared up just reading it. I'm so sorry for the loss of Nighty taken away like this from you and your daughter. Someone knows who is responsible and you need to find out and confront them. I don't know how this boy and stray dog got there but it's obvious that the boy was very upset since he was yelling and crying.

Tell your daughter the truth. I would tell her that the dog wanted to play with Nighty but the dog got to rough and Nighty went to heaven. This way she won't think all dogs are bad.

If you decide to get another rabbit I would suggest that you put locks on the cage so only you can open it. Even better keep the rabbit inside the house or garage where it's safe from this ever happening again.

Thats actually good advice. I will do that.

Thats unbelievable, actually made me feel sick. I cannot understand why someone would come into your own backyard with their dog. The boy obviously must of opened the cage on purpose (Unless the rabbit opened it). Maybe he was seeing what His dog would be like with rabbit (But it turned bad). I hope your daughter is ok, my sisters Rabbit died of cancer two months ago and she couldn't stop crying for ages. Hope everything picks up!

Rest In Piece Nighty.

Same here. Ive never had anything like this happen before. I think its just a freak thing though. It wont scare me from keeping other animals in the future.

I just hope the rabbit died quickly and didnt suffer long.

As I do with so many things, I agree wholeheartedly with what Jazzy said. Especially the part about someone knows who this kid is. He needs to be held responsible for his actions. Too often people are not held responsible for what they do and what kind of message does that give them? That whatever it was that they did wasn't such a big deal. Well, I'd wager it's going to be a big deal to your little girl.

Can you tell this story raised my hackles?

Yeah I will do some investigating.

I still can't wrap my mind around why the kid was even there to begin with... It should be common sense for people to not trespass into peoples property without the owners consent.

It's just really unfortunate how this even happened. I really hope you'll be able to find the person responsible. Nothing can replace a lost pet, but I'm sure you can give her some good comfort and support from this.
