They say the corporation went beyond sycophancy and abandoned journalism in favour of PR on behalf of the royal family.

The pressure group Republic accused the BBC of failing to give fairer coverage to opponents of the monarchy in the run up to and during the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – despite earlier indications that it would have its minority view covered by the corporation.

Graham Smith, Republic's campaign manager said: The BBC has gone completely into promotional mode. The tone and content of its coverage has gone way beyond sycophancy to the point where its acting as a public relations channel for the Windsors.

It now plans to lodge complaints with the BBC's director general Mark Thompson, along with the BBC Trust, which oversees the corporation and acts in the interests of licence payers.
