Several years ago a particularly ugly rumor went around my office about a close friend of mine.

I immediately went into investigative journalist mode and started backtracking it, when I could get somebody to tell me where they'd heard it that is.

In a couple of days I found out that when it started, it wasn't about her at all, but about somebody else who used to work there, and somehow, my friend's name got swapped with the other woman's.

I suggested to the blabbermouth that had begun the gossip that they go check out the legal liability for committing slander and then perhaps she should begin undoing the damage that had been done.

Her excuse for repeating the gossip?

"We were just talking."

She did end up apologizing to my friend.

And also, when "those that chat" went into gossip mode, they seldom did it with me in the room.
