When I have too many forums to manage, it becomes overwhelming and difficult for me to stay focused and dedicated. I need to consider the amount of time and effort required to effectively manage each forum. If I spread myself too thin across multiple platforms, I won't be able to give enough attention to any of them, which could result in unhappy and less engaged communities.

Should you only focus on running one forum, rather than multiple?

I am on staff at 3 forums and it's too much, so one of them barely gets my attention. I'm a homemaker, so I have more time than others and even for me, multiple forums is difficult to allocate my time. Of course, we also have to keep in mind that just because someone is listed on staff, it doesn't mean he/she puts in a lot of hours.

Having good solid staff on them can help if you have more than one however if you have one busy site maybe stay focused on that one.

If you're able to make time for each forum, I don't think there's anything wrong with running multiple forums. It's important to have an active group of staff on each one to help you out and ease your workload. Running multiple forums is something I aspire to do in the future but for now I am happy with just the one.

I run my own and admin/mod on several others. I work from home, so I have time to do this.

I run two forums now and I feel I am up for the task, both forums have a staff team in place that can handle things when I am not there.

If you have the willpower, time, and motivation to run multiple forums, then go for it! Otherwise, I myself like to focus on one or maybe two at the most boards. Being staff on multiple forums is different I feel, just being a moderator compared to being a board owner doesn't have as many responsibilities generally. I already have two jobs and am mostly active on four boards in total, so I keep myself pretty busy doing that.

"Too many" is bad. Defining what "too many" means is something that can only be answered by the person themselves. For some people, one can be too many, but for others 10 might be easy. It is not great to run at your limit either as life likes to add hurdles at times and having no room for error is a bad thing for sure.

It depends on the person, at the end of the day as long as you can maintain multiple forums, then it's fine to have multiple ones. If you're a person that can only handle one at a time and would get too overwhelmed with more, then stick to the one.

This is a good topic!

I feel like I am barely successful with my primary community (which has 50,000 members and still growing), and I spend all of my mental energy, time, and thought into thinking about what I can do better. I can't imagine people trying to open and run multiple communities. More power to you. I'm always impressed at the energy and enthusiasm that people have when they run multiple projects, yet I always wonder how often those projects will last.

This is only my personal philosophy, but I would rather be successful at one great community than mediocre on many.

Which forum do you run...?

I used to do a lot of stupid things. Still do. But I have gotten better. Over time, I have learned synergism - make whatever ulterior project I want to start or work on correlate with my other idea. That means, for me at least, one forum is enough (as a matter fact, right now it is one too many).

The staff that you have on your forums can be of great help to what you are trying to achieve with multiple forums. When you have active staff, they can get the job done even when you are inactive for some real-life activities.

So, while running multiple forums can be overwhelming, it is not a goal that is unattainable as long as you have the right team.

I tried having multiple forums one ends up getting more attention than the other and it’s just easier to run one forum and one website. I have the time but not the energy. Forums are a lot of work, but I love it at the same time
