Any tips for spider deterrents that are safe for cats and dogs. Like besides bug spray of course. I’ve heard something about lemon oil being affective but I haven’t tried it. Its for brow recluse spiders if that matters.
Also not sure if this is the right section for this thread, but I hope it is :)

Thanks!

And/Or:

Apply Peppermint Oil
Spiders hate the smell of peppermint. Fill a spray bottle with water and 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil and spray in places spiders tend to hide—under furniture, in closets, and in other corners and crevices of your house. In addition, add a few drops of peppermint oil to a cotton ball and strategically place them in trouble spots.

Hide Chestnuts
Chestnuts have a scent that keeps spiders at bay. Place chestnuts around your house where spiders can sneak in. Basements, attics, windowsills, and door frames are prime locations. The best part about chestnuts is that they don't leave any residue behind when scattered around the house.
( :!!: BUT--Your dogs might eat the chestnuts and/or the cats might play hockey with them. :D )

Incorporate Cedar Wood
Cedar acts as an excellent spider repellent. Incorporate as much cedar into your house as possible. Fill your closet with cedar hangers or keep your clothes in a cedar chest. Place cedar blocks inside dressers, drawers, and other small spaces where spiders might dwell.

Make a DIY Cleaning Spray
To prevent spiders from making webs behind bookshelves, large furniture, closets, and more, Block says to “use a spray made of half a cup of water, half a cup of vinegar, two tablespoons of liquid dish soap, and 20 drops of thyme oil. The scented mixture has been used to prevent them from attaching their silk to sprayed surfaces.”

Repel Spiders with Dish Soap
Another natural spider repellent you can make from household supplies is a mixture of water and liquid dish soap. Dish soap disturbs the egg cycle of spiders, and the insects strongly dislike citrus scents—lemon, lime, or orange-scented soap will do the trick.

Turn Up the Music
By far the most fun of all the options is Block’s recommendation to add music to your cleaning routine. Sounds help ward off spiders. Block says that “spiders don’t have good eyesight, so they count on vibrations to detect their meals. The vibration from music will interfere with spiders’ ability to pick the perfect time to feast, and it will make them move to a quieter area elsewhere.”

I would not ordinarily look up info like this because I normally don't disturb the harmless little house spiders, they have to make a living too.
BUT :!!: Brown Recluse! Yikes...that's something I sure don't want hanging around! I would panic, too! Please get back to us if you notice any results. :)

I have had very good results w/ getting rid of bugs with a mixture of Dr. Bronners castile soaps (peppermint, tea tree and eucalyptus) with a few drops of lemongrass and peppermint essential oil (for an added kick) and water in a spray bottle..

The bugs HATE that stuff so much that they actually came out of their hiding spots to die. It was one of the first things we did after we brought up the first of our stuff from our old apartment and I havent seen a spider or ant since.

That said, ive been told that if you have spiders, you most likely have other bugs too since that is what they are attracted to and that was true in my case..

Oh crap, I literally killed a spider every day since Saturday and I have a bad feeling we might have ants and that's what is attracting them. I haven't seen any ants though, so maybe it's some other bug they're attracted to... They're small house spiders thankfully so at least they're not brown recluses or black widows. They creep me out though, and I've also been knocking down a web on my back door almost every day since Friday. I'll have to keep these tips in this thread in mind.

Another thing that might be good for the ants is this stuff called Terro. (sp?) I think that is how it is spelled my brother told me about it and said that it takes 3 days to work, and that you will have to show some restraint when you use it.. lol

Basically, you set it up and you let the ants take the bait and take it back to the nest, what will happen is a mass-extinction event after a few days and you will be ant free provided that you don't kill them, and tip them off before that stuff can do its job.

I never got a chance to use it myself, because my brother forgot to bring it over, and at the same time, my Dr. Bronners spray was already extremely effective.. lol

And so much so that the only ants I have seen this year, were the ones that came from my husband going on to the deck the other day and leaving the door open.. lol

Spiders might be your allies in this case so I would keep a close eye on them. They creep me out too, but they aren't at the top of my hate list.. the house centipede takes that trophy and the spiders have been my greatest allies on that front, second only to my husband.. lol

I think the common little house spiders are after the small flying insects that are also common this time of year. That's the purpose of the webs in high places that you're running into.
I just leave the webs in corners of the ceilings until they get too unsightly so that the spiders can catch all of those aggravating little flying things. The flies and gnats and no-see-ums bother me a LOT more than the spiders or webs. :D
