Six people are now believed to have died and 39 others are injured after a gas explosion sparked a fire that tore through a San Francisco suburb.

THREE people were killed and dozens seriously injured when a massive fireball ripped through a leafy residential area of San Francisco.

A powerful explosion, caused by a broken gas line, sent a giant ball of fire soaring hundreds of feet into the air.

Flames then roared through the streets of San Bruno, engulfing everything in their path.

The charred body of one victim of the 6pm blast was later found lying in a street.

More than 50 homes were destroyed and 120 seriously damaged in San Bruno, not far from San Francisco International Airport.

By midnight (8am BST), local fire chief Dennis Haag said the fire was 50 per cent contained but still burning, with shifting winds a major concern.

Connie Jackson, San Bruno city manager, said: Some 100 people have been evacuated and a local disaster declaration has been made.

Our primary concern is to identify and locate all the residents of the affected area.
