Sarah Palin: Chick-Fil-A President Getting 'Crucified,' Boycott Has 'Chilling Effect' On First Amendment

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin ( R) repeated her support for fast-food chain Chick-fil-A and its president on Tuesday.

In an interview on Fox News, Palin defended Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy's decision to publicly express his anti-gay marriage views and claimed that the resulting backlash against the company was an affront to free speech.

Well, that calling for the boycott is a real -- has a chilling effect on our 1st Amendment rights, Palin told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren. And the owner of the Chick-fil-A business had merely voiced his personal opinion about supporting traditional definition of marriage, one boy, one girl, falling in love, getting married. And having voiced support for kind of that cornerstone of all civilization and all religions since the beginning of time, he then basically [is] getting crucified.

OK. Now that the hoopla has died down, I'll weigh in on the entire gay chicken thing.

As long as I don't have to either watch, hear about it, or subsidize it....

I don't care who you date, where you eat your chicken sandwich, or what anybody else thinks of those choices.

And from what I understand, you are still free to have a differing opinion and run your own business (that you built) as you see fit, at least for now, in this country. Something that is subject to change at the whim of various busybody politicians who disagree with that first statement.

As for Ms. Palin.

Did somebody call for an Irrelevant Has-been Attention-whore-grade Politician?

No. I didn't think so.

Palin defended Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy's decision to publicly express his anti-gay marriage views and claimed that the resulting backlash against the company was an affront to free speech.

Nope. It's a consequence of expressing a viewpoint that is discriminatory. Chick-fil-A is not having their right to free speech removed, they're merely suffering the consequences of their beliefs.

Then again we're talking about Palin, so I'm not surprised she said something this stupid.

Having an opinion is one thing, personal attacks such as calling gay rights activists arrogant is another. I'm all for free speech, but if you say something a bit over the line it's gonna bite you in the ass. Remember what happened to the Dixie Chicks? One jab at Mr. Bush and everyone began boycotting their music, smashing their albums, and even threatening the Dixie Chicks. The band pretty much shot themselves in the foot.

That said, Chick-Fil-A still has the best chicken sandwiches and milkshakes around.

It would seem that Mr. Cathy has learned a tough lesson. Something the aforementioned Dixie Chicks and others have learned before him.

When you take a political stand of any sort, in business as well as entertainment, you piss off half of your audience.
