School suspensions due to clothing

Do you think students who wear controversial tee-shirts such as SCHOOL IS REALLY LAME or VIDEO GAMES ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN SCHOOL should be suspended? My friend brought up this argument with me today and I find it quite an interesting debate.

No, that's just silly if you get banned for that. It's just a shirt after all.

No. They shouldn't. It's only a bit of humor.



However, if the shirt promotes violence, drugs or any other illicit act, then yes, suspend the student as it would be set out in the dress code (as most schools should have, I believe).

Why should you kick 'em out when they've got something like that on their shirt but not when they say those lines?

I don't think so. Unless clothing is promoting something illegal and/or dangerous (drugs, alcohol, violence, cigarettes, etc.) I don't see a reason to suspend a student over them.

A lot of people have school spirit(either it be staff or students). Wearing something that disrespects the school could start some drama.

No, if it says something like that, the kid shouldn't be suspended. There are other things that should...I remember a friend wearing a T-shirt that said BAMF on it...I just don't think any of the teachers knew what it meant or thought to ask a student what it meant. XD The only thing clothing wise, besides the length and all that jazz, that gets a student suspended is if it has bad language or if it promotes something illegal...I think. I'll have to find my handbook.

Anyway, if the school really doesn't agree with the clothing, just send the kid home to go change.
