What are your feelings on school uniforms for children?

Are they a good idea?

Are they a bad idea?

Please explain your choice.

I am for them, but then it is the norm over here. There is enough pressure on kids already and I have seen in schools where there is no uniform where the pressure to be 'fashionable' creates even more clicks and creates a whole new issue. In uniform schools personal taste in fashion does not get in the way of making friends or learning.

Against them. I actually wrote a paper and made a speech in high school arguing the legality of them. That was the last year we had them.

Did your paper and speech play a part in getting them removed, Guardian?

No idea. Not sure if a teacher passed it up or the board got wind. No clue, but either way it's an awesome coincidence. Whatever it was, 3 months after I did it, the board held a meeting and voted them out. :fighting:

there is a lot less hassle when it comes to uniforms.

I do some volunteer teaching and was in a school not that long ago that did not have uniforms and some of these kids were dressed like they were in music videos. Even seeing where the kids were sitting, you would think they were seated by the way they were dressed.

It defiantly is a factor you have to deal with when there are not uniforms

They would be good for schools in bad neighborhoods. Those kids need some law & order. Nobody will get bullied for not wearing the right clothes and it saves parents money not having to buy tons of outfits just for school.

They are a good idea - but when the school insists that the uniform has to come from that shop with its inflated prices - not so good for poorer families then.

Over here uniforms are mandatory at schools. There's already a campaign which helps children of families with low salaries/income to go to school.

I can understand the concepts behind it, but I also think that kids should be able to wear what they want as long as it is reasonable and abides by school guidelines (non-offensive, suggestive, etc). But I also know that they can be costly, which is ridiculous, especially if they're mandatory.

We didn't have them. Can't say I noticed any people shallow enough to complain about what others were wearing.

Come to America. :P

100% against uniforms in public schools...

now, if a private church school or private school wants to do it then they have the right to...

If they think kids won't judge other kids simply because they all wear the same uniform then I have news for you.

Kids will judge other kids regardless of what you do as they will find a way to judge one better then another and clothes is just one of many things you could be judged for in school. It doesn't really make clothes shopping any cheaper as uniforms force parents to purchase special clothing for school when not having an uniform means they can wear regular clothing and the poor can easily go into a goodwill and buy their clothes there when they can't if there is an uniform is in place.

I am all for a reasonable dress code but I don't think uniforms are the right way to go in my opinion.

As for me, I never been in a school with anything more then a dress code and I think it worked all right for me in that regard.

it's all about trying to control...

they try to make idiotic arguments to try to tyrannize the public, and if one reason/argument wont work then they'll try another and another until they get what they want...
