I am in a place right now where I know I need the help of a professional therapist, and I have sought help before for anxiety issues. Why is it that doing so, quite often, is such a frowned upon thing in this country and other parts of the world. Where is it different?

Nothing wrong with that. In fact a couple family members of mine (who live together and can't get along) are going to go into group therapy (and one-on-one sessions). They are actually looking forward to it. I'd say if it helps you, then whoever might be judging you can't hit the road, jack. :P

Are you going to have to pay for it Dee? Insurance? Free therapy?

I don't personally have a problem with it, and I don't give a shit what anyone else thinks, but it's quite the stigma when your search for help becomes public. I know a few people who could benefit well from it, but many of them refuse to seek help and I don't understand that.

Anyway, I'd pay out of pocket because my health insurance doesn't cover outpatient mental heath costs, so I'll try and look for a therapist who isn't very expensive.

Maybe they don't think they have a problem. In denial?

There's that, but there's also a rather nasty stigma surrounding seeking help for mental health issues. I've been through this with my mother, friends, etc. It's taken a lot of convincing my mom to finally see a therapist as she was in denial, and this seems to be a trend with a lot of other people.

Yeah thats true, but it's not like they have to tell people where they're going or what they're doing. They can do it discreetly if they're ashamed. But nobody should be ashamed of getting help for themselves.

I just don't understand the rampant shame that goes along with seeking help for mental health in this country. I feel it needs to change.

There's a couple psychology major's in my family. Neither are doing anything related to psychology.
