Self-injury, also called self-harm, is the act of deliberately harming your own body, such as cutting or burning yourself. It's typically not meant as a suicide attempt. Rather, self-injury is an unhealthy way to cope with emotional pain, intense anger and frustration.

Have you ever done this? If so, why?

I haven't and wouldn't. We transported a young guy ( 15 years old ) last night. I noticed cigarette burns/scars all over his arms. He said they were self-inflicted and he does it when he gets really angry.

I think I cut myself once or twice when I was a teenager, it wasn't to really hurt myself though. It was to hurt my girlfriend at the time.
Something along the lines of "You hurt my feelings so I hurt myself physically to stop thinking stop thinking about the emotional pain."
Of course I would never do something like that now, the teenage mind is weird sometimes.

Yes. Emotional pain release.

I'm sure the emotional pain was still there afterwards?

I fell and broke both my arms once, does that count? Other-wise, no, I'm a little bitch when it comes to pain, and therefore do not respond well to inflicting it on myself.

Yes, stabbed myself in the right thigh and slit my left arm, which is why I've turned myself into a mentally crazy person.

How did you turn yourself into a mentally crazy person? O.o

Yes, But at the time it felt better. All the stress and pain builds up and it then explodes. It was a way to deal with it.

@Stormrider: Are you still doing it?

It seems like a way to close your eyes to the problems you have. They are still there as you just can't see them but other time you see your problems reappear so you do it again and again. The problem with it is that you have to do more and more as your tolerance to the self harming increases the more you do it till you do so much that you end up killing yourself. It just comes off very similar to a drug addiction without the drugs but the effects are quite similar.

Someone in that position really needs someone who can help them deal with their emotions and problems without the knife. Of course a lot of people don't get why it's happening and oftentimes criticize the self harmer as being stupid. That just adds to their pain and causes them to hide themselves further from the very people who could help them overcome it.

In the end, self harming is a problem not a solution even if you might have rationalize it differently. That's what I think anyway.

Not really no, now I have tattoos. Will be getting one over the scars on my arm.

If you were doing it for Emotional pain release and have now stopped, how are you now dealing with the Emotional pain?

I'm glad you're no longer cutting.

I would never do this. I tend to think that people doing such things suffer psychologicaly. In other words, they're sick.

I found out when I was in a psychiatric hospital, wearing a strait jacket, that I was mentally crazy. To this day, I'm taking medications to reduce the anger and depression.

What were you diagnosed with?
