Several Active Accounts

I read on another forum this morning that they allow members more than one active account using different usernames. You have to request it and then get permission from the admin. I can't for the life of me figure out why this would be allowed and why a member would have several active accounts using different usernames.



Questions:



1) Do you (as a forum owner) allow this?

2) Any idea why a member would do this?

Years ago I was staff on a dial up BBS where one member had an account for games and another for 'socializing' and he had been known to send messages back and forth to himself between the two.

It's common on RPG boards where a member might have multiple accounts. Each account controls a character in a RPG. Other then that, I don't see why any member should even need more then one account outside of evading punishments which most boards disallow users from doing because of that reason.

Maybe on a RPG forum, but for a general disscussion forum, it's going to be kind of pointless. Unless if people want to talkto themselves or add themselves as friends.

One member was accusing another member of having multiple accounts and posting as both male and female. The accused member posted back so what if I do?. All hell broke loose when other members found this out. They accused him/her of deception and are very angry. One member asked him/her why and the reply was because I can. Some members are now demanding this member list all his/her usernames. The accused told them they can all bugger off. Some members want him/her banned for deception but no staff member has yet replied in this thread. Must say, it's very entertaining reading this and I hope they keep the thread going!

Even if asked, I wouldn't tell anyone.

The thread is still going and it's been proven (not sure how) that this member has posted as the following:



1) An old woman with medical problems

2) A student having a hard time adjusting to college

3) An old man who just retired and doesn't know what to do with himself

4) A woman suffering from cancer

5) A married man having problems with his wife

6) Has created other accounts where he/she pretends to be the sister, wife and husband of these other people



Man, this is just crazy and I don't understand how and why this forum is allowing this to happen. There still have been no posts made in this thread by any forum staff members.

I'm a member of another forum where this is fairly common as they don't do name changes. If you want a different username you just create a new account.

Also, as Bluezone said, some do it for RP purposes.

That's kind of nutty. What if you have 4 usernames and one username gets banned. Do they then all get banned?

Dunno, probably not.

If they do you could always appeal.

I run a role playing forum, so I don't really care if members do this. We don't use character accounts but some people still like to have multiple accounts to rp with. It helps with activity too.
