Talk about TV drama.
A registered sex offender on the run surrendered himself to authorities Thursday -- by giving his identity to a reporter.
Police were hunting for Valentino Rodriguez, 46, when he approached Eric Spillman of Los Angeles TV station KTLA, who happened to be interviewing people in east Los Angeles about Rodriguez. Rodriguez walked up to the reporter and introduced himself. I just turned around and saw him standing there, Spillman said.
Rodriguez was released on parole Oct. 4, and police were hunting for him after he cut off his GPS tracking device. Rodriguez told viewers that God wanted him to give himself up and that it was time to man up about it.
Police arrived soon after the broadcast and took Rodriguez into custody.
The parolee said he removed the bracelet because he was paranoid and suicidal. I was contemplating putting myself in front a bus or hanging myself, Rodriguez told viewers. I know it's not the right thing to do. I don't want to go to hell.
