Unless they're barn cats working to clear out the rodents, should cats as pets be kept indoors?

If they are pets yes. There are too many dangers outside even out in the country. Wild animals, dogs, cars and people that will poison them. We're in the middle of Minnesota in farm land and we have so many strays. Mostly people that came for the summer via RV's, fed a cat then left it when they headed home. That and barn cats that wandered. We have 24 rescues (inside only now) and feed another 30 outside, giving them heated shelters in the winter. We've manage to get 22 fixed but more just keep showing up.

Absolutely, pet cats should be indoors. Safe from predators, various diseases and so on.

Where I live, I constantly see people saying that they haven't seen their cat in a few days. I side with the people who tell them to keep them indoors then!! These poor animals have to fight to be alpha on the block and it's hard on them. Plus, we have foxes and coyotes who could easily take them out. Why do people think it's okay to let them outside when there are bad things waiting to happen to them?

Both of my cats have been house cats since we got them as kittens, so they have no interest in even exploring the outside world. I would say pet cats should be kept inside, but I also have friends/family who have cats that wander. They’re typically strays that they basically adopted by putting food outside.

In my family, cats need to be kept indoors. Unlike dogs, they can have their own dog house in the backyard.

Yeah we leave our cats indoors. I just grew up to see my parents doing it that way and I follow suit.

Same. You don't want them running off, getting picked up by animal control, or having a neighbor taking them in where you'll never see the cat ever again.
