Should it Cost to Change Your Name?

Here in AZ, for instance, it costs a staggering amount to change your legal name. Something I need to do for my own mental health. Others have other reasons for changing their names, should it cost money to do so?

I went years with one "L" in my name, I recently got them to change it to the right one with two "L's" in it for only 25 dollars.

This is a tough one. I think of it from their perspective. It costs money to change the name on everything. Who would foot the bill otherwise? However with that being said, I don't think it has to be quite so steep.

It should be free, although here in Britain, the fee is quite reasonable.

I changed mine in 1981.

So apparently I'm wrong, the name change has a fee attached to it that isn't that bad, but the filing fee at the clerk's office...where you go to make it all official on your documents and so forth...that's $319. So I could change my name and just still exist on paper as my deadname...which...defeats the purpose? So...yeah, phrasing it that way seems like shady business, lol, but ultimately it's around $400 all in to change your name.

I'd like to change my father's last name that I have from him. I was disowned and disinherited by his side of the family. My mom has been pushing for me to take up a different last name and it was said I'd have to see a lawyer to do that. I have no idea what they charge in Missouri.

Maybe the cost of printing up new ID / drivers license card, but all that other stuff can be done on a computer in seconds and we shouldn't be charged for that.
