Because people need a incentive. If there district improves the politicians salary improves. If the district gets worse there salary gets worse.

or maybe when they first start out, they get minimal wage, and if they do a good job then get a raise by a vote by the people they represent... and if they do a bad job then they get fired...

Thats what voting for them in office is for in the first place. I do not want career politicians but I do want them to have a real incentive to do a good job.

no, people should want to help their people no matter what they get paid...

i don't want people representing people just to get paid and have a good "career"...

most people that are politicians are in it for other reasons besides making things better or for the people they represent... the two party monopoly is set up like this for a reason, to make people only vote one or the other, and most people don't even know who they are voting for...

i'm going to take TL's side on this one. minimum wage for congress is a cute idea for propaganda purposes, but it's really not realistic.

they should get a decent wage, if for no other reason than they have to maintain two homes and offices.

they definitely shouldn't be getting so much salary with all the perks they get and there need to be term limits to eliminate professional politicians beholden to big money interests who finance their campaighs for re-election. make it the same as president. twice and adios.

Thats why term limits of one term say 5 years should be imposed. This will bring in more of the common man and the spending on campaigns will go down when the people with bad motives realize they cant spend decades in office creating corruption.

They should earn less than they currently do, but more than minimum wage. Politics, whatever you think of it, requires a certain mindset and a certain set of skills that most likely don't exist in minimum wage workers. Minimum wage jobs generally don't require much mindpower, it's do the same thing over and over and over and over until your time on shift is up.

In short, I believe politics falls under "skilled career" as opposed to "unskilled career" which is what many minimum wage jobs are.

propaganda? why is it so? when they first start out they should get paid minimal wage, and every so often get an evolution, if the person passes, then they get a little raise and get to keep their job, no propaganda, just common sense...

they don't have to have more than one home or one office, and the official office of theirs, they don't have to maintain it, the tax payers does...

i agree on term limits...

the only issue with that is that the ones that are actually doing a good job would be forced out and be replaced by a person that might not be good as the last...

haha, it takes skill to be corrupted and a crook? if you say so...

all-in-all, i'd be president for free, as long as i get the chance to serve my fellow man and to try to make things better for all, not for the few...

Thats fine.

As I recall the ancient Roman Consuls weren't paid. As such it was a position only available to the very wealthy, who then used it to become wealthier.

I imagine much the same would be true if they were paid minimum wage.

The flip side of that coin is, of course, getting money without doing any actual work. Soviet style.

I don't believe they should be paid minimum wage considering their job requires a specific set of skills and experience. It's not like they're flipping burgers, guys. I don't, however, believe they should be paid out the ass with added bonuses for doing nothing but wasting taxpayer dollars.

Pay them with food and water and a cot in a FEMA trailer.

Pay their staff minimum wage, and a meal ticket for lunch in the cafeteria.

Forbid them under penalty of public flogging from accepting gifts and bribes.

WHILE Congress is in session.

And see how fast they pass the budget and carry out their other business, and then get out of town.

Being a politician takes skill? :S
