Live within their own means, mind their own business and not giving a f--k about what the Jones's are doing or trying to keep up with them..

And if they can afford it, move to somewhere much cheaper than where they live now..

M8 you can sell your house to move somewhere cheaper lol, no need for a mortgage :p
Maybe so, but in NYC, rent for a micro-apartment (or w/e they are calling it now) is a mortgage in and of itself, and you are still limited to a space that is smaller than a hotel room. There is a lot of shady shit going on with NYC real estate especially as gentrification continues to drive out long term residents..

The moldy ass apartment we moved out of would have cost us about $3k per month just from the location alone.. it was centrally located, and near major attractions, and provided that mass transit was on time, you could get into the city in 30 mins.. and if you rented out someone's basement in the nearby residential houses, you would have paid about $3,500 for half the space. My mortgage isn't even a third of that now. And it would cost more if you needed a garage for your car.. it would be like paying rent for 2 apartments.

And that is not even counting the various safety violations you'd have to worry about.. when Hurricane Ida hit 2 years ago, and caused massive flooding that killed a lot of people, it turned out that many of the victims lived in illegal basement apartments that had been converted from a single family house. Many victims were trapped when the flooding hit.

Living within their means is a HUGE one. A lot of people are living off credit debt (understandably for things like education and a roof over ones head), and a lot of that is buying things they simply cannot afford to maintain.
