The most intense solar storm to have been recorded in the past six years has been responsible for the spectacular Northern Lights show witnessed across many northern areas of earth this week.

But the flares - which were captured on video by Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory - have also led to some flight disruptions as the radiation responsible for the celestial light show can also play havoc with aircraft communications.
