A mile or more of identical trees planted in a grid.

Who knew that TREES were being cloned?

And a wonderful technique it is.

If you want a lot of small timber, perhaps so you can frame out a wall that is made of paper.

If you want to make a floor joist, you're going to need a lot of those small trees lamented together.

What is just as interesting as the technique itself is that damned near every article you see about it uses the same photo of the same tree.

When you go digging around, you can find a few others.

However, while it is done, it isn't as widespread even on the Japanese home islands as some would want you to believe.

It can only be done to a few very specific types of trees, and the lumber so produced isn't suitable for many applications.
