S.C. (Reuters) - South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said she will sign a bill at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT) on Thursday to remove permanently the Confederate battle flag from the state capitol grounds.

The bill was passed by the South Carolina Legislature in the early morning after a marathon debate in the House of Representatives.

The Civil War-era flag, nicknamed the "Stars and Bars," is viewed as a symbol of racism by some in the United States and of Southern heritage by others. It has flown at the statehouse for more than 50 years.
