The landmark film saga is being re-released on Blu-ray on Monday. Matt Warman takes a look.
George Lucasââ¬â¢s classic Star Wars films have been re-released in a host of different formats. But on Monday, what is perhaps the ultimate version will hit the shops. A box set of Blu-ray discs will include all six films, totally remastered and revitalised, along with three more whole discs of extras, deleted scenes and genuinely never-before seen footage. At nine-discs in all, it is a fansââ¬â¢ dream but it is also a tour-de-force for the Blu-ray HD technology.
Every light sabre has been given a new, brighter definition, but more importantly, even the original 1977 film , Star Wars: A New Hope, looks as though it were made using the latest cameras in the highest definition.
In part, thatââ¬â¢s because of the attention that such hugely popular movies command. At Lucasfilm in San Francisco, despite the countless other films that the company has made, it is still Darth Vader who commands the lobby. The Force is strong.
The most appealing aspects of the Blu-ray release are two-fold, however. Matthew Wood, of Skywalker Sound, has re-edited the soundtracks for all six films directly with George Lucas. ââ¬ÅWhatââ¬â¢s great is that the home formats are catching up with us ââ¬â so we can play this stuff back the way the movies were meant to be heard in cinemas,ââ¬Â he says.
Going back to the original audio reels for the first time, Wood has been able to present the filmsââ¬â¢ sound exactly as George Lucas wants, in 6.1 surround audio.
