Electronic Arts is hoping that a multiplayer online video game based on the Star Wars series can give it the edge over Activision-Blizzard's World of Warcraft.

Star Wars - The Old Republic is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) set in the world of Jedis and Sith lords, thousands of years before the events in George Lucas's film series. The game is released tomorrow but some players who pre-ordered the title have had access to the online world since last week.

For a monthly subscription of £8.99, players can create their own characters and then join up with others to explore the world and complete missions. Two million gamers joined the beta test for the title, which is thought to have cost around $100 million, making it the most expensive video game ever made.

World of Warcraft, the most successful MMORPG, has more than 10 million players but numbers have been declining this year. And with 46 million gamers playing MMOs in the US alone, EA will be hoping that a big brand like Star Wars can help it claim a strong position in the market.

However, some analysts suggest that Star Wars -The Old Republic could be among the last subscription-based MMORPGs as more games are released that offer free access and charge players for small in-game purchases. Earlier this year, World of Warcraft developer Activision-Blizzard announced that the game's first 20 levels would be free to new players. Only after that would they be required to pay the monthly subscription.

Question: Anyone going to get this game?

Well EA can probably dream, as MMORPG's are dying, even WOW numbers are significantly down.

Thought about it for a while but it's not worth the money. I don't have the time to play it enough.

Wow, if I didn't have to pay a subscription fee. I would definitely play this.
