For some users, Facebook can be as addictive as any drug - and now scientists have designed a simple test to root out addicts from ordinary users.
Up to 85% of Facebook users log in daily - and using social networks activates the same 'reward' centres as sex, food and money - but the simple six point scale should root out those who use the site healthily from those who are dangerously hooked.
It is based on the same 'six core elements of addiction' that doctors use to identify alcoholics and drug addicts, as the signs are similar, said the journal Psychological Reports.
These six elements are salience - 'wanting' the site - mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse.
The researchers from the University of Bergen, Norway, compiled a detailed questionnaire to test Facebook addiction among 423 students.
An earlier University of Gothenburg survey of 1,000 students found that up to 85% of users say that they use Facebook daily - and half say they start up Facebook as soon as they open their web browsers.
Half fear that they are not 'on top of things' if they are not logged into the site, and 25% say they fill 'ill at ease' if they can't log in regularly.
The new test should help root out addicts.
This included not just how often they were on the site but what their attitudes were to it, how it affected their lives and whether they tried to restrict their own use.
From that they came up with a simple six point test (see below) which anyone can use to see if they are a Facebook fan or a Facebook fanatic.
ARE YOU HOOKED? SIMPLE SIX-POINT SCALE SEPARATES HEALTHY USERS FROM FACEBOOK ADDICTS
Here are six basic statements. Answer from the following scale: 1 = Very rarely; 2 = Rarely; 3 = Sometimes; 4 = Often and 5 = Very often.
You spend a lot of time thinking about Facebook or plan use of Facebook.
You feel an urge to use Facebook more and more.
You use Facebook in order to forget about personal problems.
You have tried to cut down on the use of Facebook without success.
You become restless or troubled if you are prohibited from using Facebook.
You use Facebook so much that it has had a negative impact on your job/studies.
If you score 4 (often) or 5 (always) on at least four of these six points, then you could be addicted to Facebook.
