I've had a go at this in my Maths class in school years ago, and I have absolutely no idea how to play it. My brain hurts each time I try to figure it out

You don't know how to play, but you can't stand it because it's too complex?

Once you get the hang of it, it's not so hard.

It does not really make sense to me. Had to do it once for a friend and got everything wrong.
