Officials in India suggested that a Swiss tourist and her husband are partially to blame for an alleged attack and gang rape in a remote wooded area in Madhya Pradesh last week. They said the couple did not inquire about the safety of the region.

On Friday, a Swiss woman and her husband pitched a tent in a forest in Madhya Pradesh while on a three-month cycling excursion, according to the Associated Press. Around 9:30 p.m. a group of men attacked the couple, beat up the husband, tied him to a tree, gang raped the wife and robbed the pair, police said.

During a press conference on Sunday, police spokesperson Avnesh Kumar Budholiya suggested the tourists are partially to blame for the assault because they chose to travel that area without speaking to local police, the Independent reports.

Do you think the tourists are partially to blame for the assault? Why or why not.

Not at all, but there is a lesson in it though. People these days think that with easy travel it is safe and ok to go off into the back roads and hills of these places exploring, and although it should be OK, people around the world do not live by the same standards. Was it their fault? No, rape is never the fault of the victim, did they put themselves at personal risk? yes

If it's anyone's fault beyond the actual perpetrators, it'd be the local authorities for not keeping the region safe in the first place.

This is my point, the local authorities also consider her to be responsible, they say that she shouldn't have been there and that if they had checked, they would have know it was an unsafe area.

Right or wrong the point is that people can not just assume that every country is like their own and it is safe to go do what ever you want to do.

No one deserves to be raped or assaulted. With that said, these people were on a three month cycling excursion. If I were them, I would have done extensive research on the entire area where I would be visiting. That research would have included such things as crime rate and what areas are not safe to be in. As mentioned by seasidemike, you cannot just assume that every place is safe.
