An unemployed man claims he was shamed by Jobcentre staff for wearing an ‘inappropriate’ T-shirt that read: ‘Nobody knows I’m gay.’

Shaun Clark, 28, hit out at staff for ‘discrimination’ and says he will continue to wear it as an act of defiance.

The job-seeker, who has been on Job Seekers’ Allowance for around four years, said: ‘I am proud to be gay and I don’t think there is anything wrong with the T-shirt.

‘I have always worn a shirt and tie to an interview but I feel there is nothing wrong in wearing the T-shirt to the Jobcentre.

‘It is discrimination.’

A spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions said that its staff advise job-seekers on the best possible ways to find work.

The spokesman added: ‘Our Jobcentre Plus advisers up and down the country work hard every day supporting people into jobs and treating everyone fairly.

Staff in our Burnley branch encourage all job-seekers to dress in smart interview attire, as employers regularly attend and recruit directly from the Jobcentre.’

Shaun argues he had worn a shirt and tie to a recent interview with the Best Connection group and was waiting to hear back from them about a job offer.

He plans to continue to wear the T-shirt to appointments at the Jobcentre, in Burnley, Lancashire.

Shaun added: ‘I dont think you should be told what to wear. There is nothing wrong with the T-shirt. It is not scruffy and I am always smart when I go to my appointments.

‘I think they are unhappy because of the slogan on the T-shirt.’

Thoughts?

I have seen people wearing worse in my local job centre so for someone to be discriminated against for something like this it seems pretty harsh. So he is gay and doesn't mind making that known with a t-shirt that he himself is happy to wear. I say good for him because there is not many people that would do that if I am honest. It wasn't like he was at the job centre for a job interview and as he states if he has a job interview he is quite happy to wear the appropriate clothing. I personally feel that maybe he caught the eye of a person who was having a bad day and decided to take it out on him because of his t-shirt.

I found the one time I had to use a job center that most of the staff were absolutely useless not all but a vast majority had a bad attitude towards the unemployed, patronising, self-righteous and jut plain rude but don't get me started ffs......
so I am not surprised this bloke has had the trouble he has.

Due to the fact a potential employer could be there, I find his T-Shirt to be inappropriate.

In the six months I used a job center there was never a potential employer there and the standard of dress varied from very smart to down and out so I doubt any potential employer would take any notice unless there to do an interview.

I agree with Dr on this.

I have NO problem with gays. In fact I have a few friends who are gay. BUT! He is wearing that for a reaction. THAT is NOT professional. It has nothing to do with the shirt, slogan shirts are worn for a reaction, he got one and is claiming discrimination. Ermm no mate! You are trying to get a job, you need to behave properly!

The behavior he is showing is not what businesses want to see.
