An Idaho State University instructor was wounded in the foot after a concealed handgun in the person's pocket discharged during a chemistry lab session with students in the room, school officials said.

Arriving Pocatello police officers found the instructor on Tuesday in the Physical Science Complex with a non-life threatening injury.

The person was treated and released at Portneuf Medical Center, police Lt. Paul Manning said. No other injuries were reported.

Police said the person had the proper permits to carry a concealed weapon on campus.

Idaho State University spokeswoman Adrienne King said the school is not releasing the name of the instructor because the matter is a personnel issue. Police also refused to release the name.

King said there could be an administrative review after police complete their investigation.

The chemistry lab has 19 registered students, but it wasn't clear how many were in the lab at the time the gun discharged, King said.

King said the school has an alert system but didn't use it because police quickly determined the shooting was an isolated incident.

"It's unfortunate," ISU President Arthur Vailas told the Idaho State Journal. "I'm sure the incident was scary and embarrassing."

Despite opposition from every public university college president, lawmakers passed legislation earlier this year allowing retired law enforcement officers and people with concealed-carry permits to take firearms onto public college and university campuses but not into dormitories or stadiums.

What are your thoughts on this?

I'd think it would be better for him if he put the safety on if he is going to carry it around in his pocket. It just sounds dangerous to carry around a loaded pistol without the safety on in your pocket as I can so easily see how it could have shot a round off no matter how careful you are.

All i see is an unfortunate accident and not a marker that they were being dumb just not realizing how sensitive or easy it would be for the trigger to get pulled by the gun being in a pocket possibly along with other things.

I don't really think much else about it other than he needs to learn how to handle and carry his weapon better if he's going to walk around with it strapped to his body. I get that you want to try and protect yourselves and the lives of others, but if you can't manage to engage the safety on your weapon, then you kind of deserve to get shot by your dumbass self. xD

~Update~

The Idaho State University instructor who accidentally shot himself in the foot Tuesday has been identified as Byron Bennett, an assistant professor of chemistry.

Bennett was giving a lecture Tuesday when a small caliber pistol that he was carrying in his pocket discharged. The incident occurred in the Physical Science Complex at 785 South Eighth Avenue just before 4 p.m. ISU Public Safety and the Pocatello police responded to the scene.

According to police reports, Bennett possesses a current Idaho Enhanced Concealed Weapons Permit, an Idaho Basic Concealed Weapons Permit and a Utah Concealed Weapons Permit.

There were about 20 students in the classroom when the weapon discharged, but the gun was never displayed and no one, but Bennett was injured.
