A 16-year-old is in intensive care after apparently taking "Mortal Kombat", a drug which has been linked to the death of another teenager last month.

He was taken ill at a house party in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, on Saturday, along with a 17-year-old boy.

The 16-year-old is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

The two teenagers went to Monklands District General Hospital in Airdrie at about 11.30pm.

Police Scotland said they believe the drugs taken included ecstasy and "possibly" a "Mortal Kombat" tablet.

The drug is distributed in red tablets with a dragon imprinted upon them.

The exact content of the drug is uncertain, but it is thought to be an ecstasy-type compound containing mephedrone and ketamine.

Regane MacColl, 17, from Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, collapsed at The Arches nightclub in central Glasgow last month after taking the drug. She later died in hospital.

The latest incident has prompted renewed warnings about the danger of the tablets.

Detective Inspector Debbie Johnstone, of Coatbridge CID, said: "Illicit drugs are dangerous. I would ask that anyone with information about the supply of drugs, in particular, the type described as mortal kombat, contact police on the non emergency number 101 or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence."

I highly doubt anyone is going to come forward and tell the police where they get their drug supply. That would be openly admitting you take illicit drugs. These people who take these drugs are stupid but they aren't that stupid.

I do know this is a bit dated, but this has been something that has been going on in my city for a while. The girl who took this pill went to a place I've been to known as 'The Arches' - it's kind of a bit off, since the girl was 17. She wasn't even of legal age - no idea how the bouncers can let in underage girls with no ID, but can knock back legal adults. I hate bouncers. If they'd learned to do their jobs, maybe there would be one less death. But tbh, if the girl had known not to take stuff like this, it could have also been circumvented.

If you guys are going to take ecstasy, then please, just be really careful. Look out for junk like this. It's a shame.

It's just business. Bouncers are pretty much supposed to let (slightly) underage girls without IDs in.

If you wanna take drugs relatively safely you need a good friend who knows about this stuff. The emblem on top means a lot with XTC and if you don't know what it means never take it. Your safest bet with this kind of high is powder based MDMA (the working component in XTC), this way you can get a better dose and if it's shit you haven't taken the whole thing yet.

Although best is of course to never take shit like this at all. It's seriously poison. When I used to do it I was depressed for days after it and didn't have any energy to move away from the couch. It's not worth the few hours of joy. Just remember if you go high you gotta go low...

Where do these kids get hold of this crap, anyway??!

Here you just have to walk to the corner of the street and ask the first dutch guy you see. All that stuff is coming from Holland.

My general opinion of people who do this is "good riddance". You did something stupid and it backfired. You're a dumb shit and it's one less waste of oxygen on the planet.

In Costa Rica most people, even young people under 18, died due to illicit drugs, but there hasn't been any case where that drug was the cause.
