In what situations would a temporary / short-term ban be needed?

In what situations would a permanent ban be needed?

Well I temp ban (usually 2 weeks or a month) everyone who messes up after not listening to several PM warnings or official board warnings/infractions. They can come back 2 weeks / a month later and behave. If not then its time for a permanent ban.

I ban people If they get three infractions, That would lead to a temp ban which ranges from 1 day - 30 days depending on the seriousness off the offense on the forum.

Permanent bans are only used for extremely serious forum offenses

Pretty basic for me, if they disobey the rules, I will give them warnings until finally if they don't take the hint I will give them a temporary ban, which usually lasts anywhere between two weeks and two months. If they continue to tick me off like said, the permanent ban becomes a possibility.

If they continue to tick you off or if break the rules?

I suppose someone could get on your nerves without breaking the rules.

If they're a troublesome member, then a temp. ban would be an option to straighten them out. Meanwhile, giving them time to calm down and figure out whether or not they really want to stick around the place. Last resort would be a perm. ban. That's after the temp. ban doesn't work and they obviously are only here to cause trouble and don't want to stick around.

I think I'm kind of on the crowd if you need to get banned, it shouldn't be for a temporary thing. Obviously something has been done to warrant a ban. To be honest I don't know. Maybe, just maybe, a temp ban for someone having a bad day that caused them to act out of character?

Temp bans are easier than placing moderator approval on their posts (which is another option for problem members). Having to sift their each post and decide where it should be public or not just creates more work for us, takes time away from us posting and enjoying the community. I'd rather just temp ban them and give everyone a break until they come back.

Makes sense - why a member can’t quietly or agree to take a break until they’re ready to come back is beyond me.

Also, I think temp bans also serve as a warning to others they’ll be punished if they repeatedly cause trouble or break the rules, so it’s a good deterrent in effect.

Nebz I was always under the impression you rarely have to ban members, given that most keep themselves under control.

Yep, temporary bans don't always work. Some people come back and cause problems because they thrive on conflict and drama.

@Nebulous suggested talking it out. So I’m wondering why anyone would go as far to disrespect a site owner’s wishes if they were to suggest taking a break for a bit, and get to the point of needing to be temp banned in the first place.

It’s kinda like something I do when things get heated with friends. Never really needed to block each other. We’ll just agree to take a break. That’s maturity.

That because "talking it out" failed and that's where the temporary ban which forces a member to take a break or be put in time out was put into place.
