A 23-year-old mentally disabled Chinese man has spent most of his life locked inside a wooden cage because his family cannot afford to pay for health care.

Wei Yun, who lives in southern Guangxi Province, and cannot walk or talk, has been keep in the cage since he knocked over a pot of boiling water and almost died when he was two.

He is kept in the cage alone for most of the day, as his father works away from home and rarely visits, and his stepmother also works.

One neighbour said: It's a hard choice for her as she on one hand has to take care of Wei Yun but on the other she has to do field work and other odd jobs to support the family.

China has at least 100 million people suffering from mental illness, according to health officials. In 2009, it overtook heart disease and cancer as the biggest burden on the Chinese health system, according to the World Health Organisation, affecting some seven per cent of the population. The definition is broad however, and a large proportion suffer from relatively minor conditions such as anxiety or depression.

Good grief! This poor guy is nothing more than a caged animal. Very upsetting story!
