In 2008, the Maersk Oil company completed drilling on a hole 12.29 km in depth, surpassing the Kola borehole by 29 meters. Despite having their borehole demoted to the world's second deepest, the Russians probably do not anticipate rivalry when it comes to the length of organization names: today the site is operated by the State Scientific Enterprise on Superdeep Drilling and Complex Investigations in the Earth’s Interior as the Deep Geolaboratory.
