’Tis the season to be haunted: With the autumnal breezes come shorter days, longer nights, and the harkening of Halloween. As one of the oldest holidays celebrated around the world, Halloween is also the only one that revolves around death, ghosts, and general spookiness. For those curious about where the creepiest of the creepy places are in this relatively young country of ours, fear not! This great land has its fair share of spine-tingling destinations. While ghostly activities may not be a guarantee, the mystique of these destinations alone can enchant naysayers and enrapture the true believers. Here are our top five creepiest towns in America.

Questions:

Have you ever visited any of these towns?

If so, which one/ones?

Did you find the town/towns creepy?

I've been to NOLA.

And you have to look a LONG way past the touristy crap to get to the good stuff.

For instance, a ghost sign from a bygone era.

i've been in every one of them. the only thing that creeped me out at all along these lines was the above ground crypts in the big sleazy and key west. there's a serenity to old grave yards that's totally missing from the above ground ones, like the spirits aren't getting enough rest.

what happened in salem was creepy but it's probably more creepy the way the whole thing has been turned into a tourist attraction.

i was in charleston helping with the hurricane hugo clean-up and stopped in savannah on the way to florida which was where i was headed when the hurricane hit while i was in DC for some big demonstrantions. the people of the deep south are typically xenophobic and it was worse in hugo's aftermath. they couldn't get rid of the volunteers fast enough if they were from out of state. a jewish hippie travelling with a black hippie and a dog that got snarly real easily in a wildly colored 20 year old motor home didn't help at all. in all, i think we creeped the locals out more than they creeped us.
