Do you lock or delete new threads if there is a similar topic out on the forum? Or do you allow a new conversation since the other topic is old and and burried under (for example) 7 months worth of posts?

I normally let it slide.

So long as it hasn't been discussed like 70 times over.

I would just merge them together. If they are both the same topic then there's no point in splitting up the discussion amongst several threads.

If I know there is another topic, I probably wont go searching for it. Sometimes though, guess it depends on how I feel at the moment.

Ive been on forums where the staff get angry when this happens. Telling you to use the search button before you create a topic next time... Yeah, like I am going to do that.

Sometimes if I'm not sure about a topic, then I'll search to see if it's been posted before. But other than that.... I post the topic XD

I've started using the Merge topic feature. Found that to be very handy! Other then that. I don't say much at all. Sometimes I've even forgotten that a topic already existed and posted something up related to it. Then had it pointed out to me that we already had a topic for it.

Merge or close.

But if the old thread had like no post on it then i will let it slide.

I'd just merge it. It seems pointless to go on a rage about it, especially if the previous topic hasn't been touched for months on end.

If by chance my forum happens to be a year or more old, and the topic is already on page five, then I'll allow a new one to take it's place, as there's no need to respond to a year old topic. However, if the topic is only on page 2 then I'll probably merge the two threads together with a kind reminder saying we already have such a topic going and there's no need for another one.

I'm thinking about having a forum all with the 'hot topics' of my promotion forum. That way people just talk in the 'hot topic' and if a new topic gets created it will be merged into the existing one.
